R9-Octagonal Flagon

This flagon falls into a category of vessel, popular in the 14th century, and known as ‘square’ pots. It holds just over a quart of liquid and would have been used for bringing ale or wine to the table.

Three examples have currently been found in England to date, while further examples have been found on the continent. Our replica is copied from the ‘Tonbridge Flagon’, a fine example found in the River Medway near to Tonbridge Castle. A castle would have been the likely home for such a vessel, which would have been an item of great value and restricted to noble or merchant households.

Original found in River Medway.

14th Century.

240mm.
